This is a counter to a friend of mine who wrote a journal (and blog) and made mention of me.
First of all, I want to state that, again, your opinion is biased because of your philosophical view on the subject and misunderstanding of those who pursue the miracles of science. While personal experiences can increase understanding on some issues, the journal (and blog) you wrote shows your lack of understanding in science and emotionally fragile states. Now that this has been established, it pretty much reduces your journal (and blog) to nothing. For if you understand nothing in which you talk about, you know nothing in which you talk about.
Regardless, I will still pick apart at your faulty logic.
Relationships (in reference to knowledge)
Knowing everything about someone in a relationship will not kill it. That is an assumption without grounds. Show me examples, evidence and facts that the more you know about someone, the more it kills the relationship. Granted, the new feeling you got when you were getting to know them has faded(depending on the people, length of relationship, and personal standards). But that doesnt mean that it impacts the relationship in a negative way.
As for the more we know, the less we care statements, this only proves your lack of understanding of the definition, process and facts of science. Yes, people used to worship the moon. They also worshipped the sun, stars, animals and invisible spirits. Luckily, through reasoning we are now aware of the fallacies in finding power in things we dont quite understand. Ive never stopped loving stars, planets, plants, animals, and the universe in general. And Im fully aware of the facts behind them. Learning about them never detoured me from them. It never made me care less, it made me care more.
Granted, that is all personal experience. But what about the physicists, biologists and cosmologists? Their lives and jobs revolve around science. They went to school and learned everything they could about their major, and continue to learn even after the math. The answer is right in front of you. They aspired to those professions because they love to learn about them and want to discover more on the subject. How is that bland and meaningless?
I also see no reason to fear or respect something that doesnt effect me, but only the tide. When and if the moon is on a collision course for Earth, Ill fear being left on this planet when it gets here, but not the actual moon itself. Inanimate objects, regardless of their superstitious history, should not be feared unless they pose a threat at any time. And even then, probability should be taken into account.
Your arguments also turns against itself. Your claims are made on the assumption that all people grow tired of something they have eminent or advanced understanding of.
The only thing you portrayed even the slightest bit of accuracy on, was that our knowledge and understanding, our modern-day-marvels now would be seen as magic to an older generation depending on time(and place).
Example: There are parts in Africa that have tribes still living like it was caveman days. They have zero awareness that there is anything outside of their daily lives that consists of survival (i.e. mating, hunting, sleeping, eating).
In conclusion, science is a good thing. It brings understanding to a subject that might, otherwise, be given a mystical quality, and be false. Science is about finding the facts, or the truth about something. Be it, gravity, quantum mechanics or marine biology.
And, before you disregard science again, you might want to think about what is right in front of you, right now, as you are reading this. A computer monitor, connected to a computer. Or in fact, the PS3, flat screen TV, and X-BOX360 you have in your room. How were such wonderful items of entertainment created? Bingo! Science is behind all of them.
Sincerely,
Ina
